Biso Ella Falls in Matale

Biso Ella Falls in Matale

This waterfall belongs to the Matale Yatawatta Divisional Secretariat and is located at the Navgala Kanda and Hulangala rock on the Yatawatta border. After passing Yatawatta on the Matale-Kurunegala road, take the Salagama road and from there take the Nikagolla road to see the waterfall. The water from the springs at the top of the Salagama hill falls from a rock about a thousand feet high and forms the Biso Falls.

Legend has it that during the reign of King Walagamba, King Walagamba hid seven of his queens on the cliffs for protection, saying that if he won the war he would raise a white flag, and if he lost, he would fly a red flag. Later, when the king won the war, a group of conspirators set up a red flag instead of white. It is also mentioned in the historical book Matale that the queens jumped from this waterfall and committed suicide.

Accordingly, it is said that this place has been named as Bisowaruna Penna Ella, Biso Ella. Legend has it that the blood of the queens was collected a few kilometers away and was named ‘Ratale Wewa’.
