Dry Zone Botanical Garden in Hambanthota

Dry Zone Botanical Garden in Hambanthota

The contribution of nature to the beauty of a country is indescribable. Our country can be described as one of the highest in the world in terms of natural beauty. Thus, the botanical gardens that we see in our country can be introduced as an element that further enhances the beauty of our country. They are an asset to our country as well as a legacy to future generations.

There are five major botanical gardens in our country and the Mirijjawila Botanic Gardens can be introduced as one of the most recently established botanical gardens. Mirijjawila Botanic Gardens is the first arid zone botanical garden built in Sri Lanka. It can also be identified as the first botanical garden built by Sri Lankans after independence.

The park is located about five kilometers from the sea to the mainland. It is located on the south side of the Colombo-Kataragama main road and the east side of the Mirijjawila Suriyawewa road. Construction of the park began in 2006. The park was opened to the public on November 14, 2013, to coincide with the 2013  Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka.
