Groote Kerk in Galle, Sri Lanka

groote-kerk

The Dutch Reformed Church of the Galle Fort, also known as the Groote Kerk, is one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use on the island. It is situated near the entrance to the fort. The church was built in 1755 by the Dutch. The Dutch Reformed Church was the first to be erected near the clock tower. However, it was small and had to be moved to a larger and wider building with the growing congregation, Groote Kerk. This church is the tallest of the Galle Fort and stands 12 meters (39 ft) above sea level. The foundation of the church was first laid in 1682. The church underwent many changes during the British rule.

Groote Kerk is built with a Baroque facade following the architectural style that was popular during the era. This structure bears a striking resemblance to the Wolvendahl church built by the Dutch in Colombo. The structure is in the standard cruciform shape, while the semi-transepts are shorter than usual. The lawn around the church is wide and open. Nevertheless, the walls of the Dutch church, which passed away during the Dutch colonial period, are close to the tomb walls. A pebble pathway runs alongside the tombstones, allowing visitors to take a look at them.

However, no paintings and murals depicting the Baroque style of the interior. However, there are stained glass windows with beautiful arches. The ceiling was originally painted in blue and painted with gold stars. The floor of the church is made of tombs dedicated to the memory of church members who passed away centuries ago. Burial chambers lie beneath these. There are memorial tablets bearing plaques commemorating the deaths of Commandeur Abraham Samland, a well-known Commandeur of Galle in the 18th century.

Beautiful honeycomb floor tiles and cane pews are worth a look. Don’t forget to visit the cemetery that leads to the chambers beneath the church floor.
