Hakgala Mountain is located in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka. The height of the mountain is 2,169 meters and it is the 7th highest mountain in Sri Lanka. Most parts of the mountain are covered with forests. The name Hakgala is derived from the Sinhala word ‘hak’, meaning jaw, and ‘gala’, meaning rock, due to the mountain peaks in the Hakgala massif resembling an elephant’s jaw.

Due to its unique environmental characteristics, it was declared a Strict Nature Reserve. Many of the plants here are endemic. This place is full of wonderful things. A special permit from the Wildlife Authority is required to explore this significant attraction. Hakgala Botanic Gardens is located on the northeastern slope of Hakgala Hill.

According to legend, Mount Hakgala is made of a piece of stone brought by Hanuman from the Ramayana from the peaks of the Great Himalayas. From Nuwara Eliya travel approximately 15.4 km along the Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway passing Katumana and Seetha Eliya to reach the Hakgala Mountain.
