Lenagala Raja Maha Viharaya

Lenagala Raja Maha Viharaya

Dedigama Lenagala Raja Maha Viharaya can be identified as a historical place with a history dating back to the days of King Walagamba. This is one of the largest and most beautiful cave temples with dripstones. The largest inscription in Brahmi script can also be seen in this temple which was built to preserve the uniqueness of the natural beauty. This place has a long history and there are legends dating back to the time of Ravana. That is, it is also famous as a place where King Rawana stopped his vehicle called “Dandumonara”.

Also, according to the historical evidence found here, this land is important as a place where King Walagamba organized his army to provide protection to the king. This temple also has the second tallest stone doorway in Sri Lanka. Also, there are about 28 stone caves near this temple site. They are inhabited by meditative monks. Legend has it that there was a tunnel from Lenagala to Salgala Kanda and King Walagamba passed through it. The entrance to this tunnel can still be seen today. Lenagala temple can be mentioned as a special temple. Because the history, the paintings and the sculptures, the location, the environment, and all the elements of a temple are so well organized. However, we remind that archeological attention should be paid to this as many of the ancient paintings and sculptures here are in danger of extinction.
