Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya

Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya

If you want to see how tea is grown, selected, and processed, Sri Lanka, is the place to go. Many tea estates in the country include walks through tea plantations, factory visits, and often tea tasting. The Mackwoods Laboratory Tea Center is probably the most popular of the estates, not because of its tea museum, but the Hollywood mark is because of its irony. Huge white letters can be seen for miles on the Mackwoods sign, which is one of the most photographed features in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Located in the heart of the tea estate between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, the tea center is located at an altitude of 6,500 feet (2,000 m) and, like its counterpart in Los Angeles, is located at the top of the hill.

Mackwoods is a historic tea factory covering over 27,000 acres of tea and rubber plantations. It was first started in 1841 by Captain William Mackwood at the beginning of the tea estates in Sri Lanka; It is the second oldest trading company in the country. The company remained with the Mackwoods family until it was handed over to N.S.O.Mendis in 1956. Mendis is a visionary Sri Lankan entrepreneur. Mackwoods later became known as a brand; Is a pioneer in tea estate management with over 10,200 employees.

You can take on a local bus from the bus station in the center of Nuwara Eliya. There is a bus stop with a ‘Labookellie’ sign above it and a small bus takes you there. Buses are pretty regular and very cheap. If you tell the conductor where you want to get off the bus he will tell you when you get to the right stop. If you decide to travel by train to Nuwara Eliya from Colombo it is only about £5 for a first-class (air-conditioned) ticket to the nearest station Nanu Oya (about a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from the town center) but 2nd class is a lot cheaper and the windows open so you get a better view. Even for the second-class, you need to book in advance. Fantastic train journey particulate after you pass Kandy and much of that has a 15mph speed limit so you get plenty of time to take in the views.

It was the first tea factory in Sri Lanka to be awarded the ISO 9001: 2000 certification by SGS, UK. It is a state-of-the-art facility that benefits greatly from the techniques adopted by Mackwoods’ research and development team. Visitors to Labookellie Tea Center will have the opportunity to see the quality and latest power distribution at the Mackwoods Tea Center. There is also a museum of Mackwoods history. Various tea-related souvenirs are available for sale at this center, it makes great gifts for friends and family.
