Rambodagala Buddha Statue

Rambodagala Buddha Statue

A large stone carving is carved in the quiet village of Rambadagalla in Ridigama in the Kurunegala District. The Rambodagalla Buddha statue is not an ordinary statue but an example of the Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan, which was destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.

It is worth explaining why a statue of the Barmian Buddha is sculpted in the Kurunegala hills. After the Taliban act, which angered the world, the troubled village youth met with their priest and asked him to take some action. Ven. Egodomulla Amaramoli Thera gave them the patient’s hearing and was determined to control the youth’s emotions. The next day he called a meeting and proposed to build a replica of the Bamiyan Buddha in the village itself to show the world a positive response to a tragic act. Rs. 1,358 and handed it over to Thera.
