Seven Virgins Mountain in Nuwara Eliya

Seven Virgins Mountain in Nuwara Eliya

No doubt you have ever heard of the Seven Virgin Mountains. The worst plane crash in Sri Lanka has taken place near the Seven Virgin mountain range. This mountain range is located in the area belonging to the Nortonbridge Police Division in the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division in the Nuwara Eliya District.

This mountain range is called the Sapta Kanya because these seven large rocks appear as seven virgins standing in a row. Also known as “Anjimalai” in Tamil and “Seven Hills” in English.

From Nortonbridge, where the Wimalasurendra Power Plant, the first hydropower plant in the country, is located, at the double point at “Binduwa Kanuwa” (0) on the Hatton – Maskeliya main road (Sripada road), turn left and proceed to the right side of the road. The mountain range overlooks the 4th pillar of the area. The Lakshapana Falls flows near this mountain range, which is one of the eye-catching places on the Sri Pada road. Turn right at the 4th pillar and after about 3 km you will reach the “Dutch Cemetery” at the foot of the mountain where the bodies of those who died in the terrible plane crash that hit the Sapta Range were buried.

The Seven Virgin mountain range, located above the Lakshapana Hydro Power Plant, is located in an environment where most of the day is covered by mist.
