Galle is one of the top tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s first underwater museum was opened on 17th June 2020 in the coastal area of ​​Galle, which is the capital of the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It is located close to Galle Harbor. This underwater museum project has been implemented by the Sri Lanka Navy under the guidance of the Government of Sri Lanka. This underwater museum is the latest addition to the Sri Lankan Museum collection.

The main objectives of this Underwater Museum are to increase tourist attraction to the country. Sri Lanka is an island. So there have great opportunities for maritime tourism. Another important objective of this underwater museum is to create artificial coral reefs and enhancing marine life in Galle.

The Sri Lanka Galle Underwater Museum is located in the 50ft / 15m deep sea. This is now open to the public and opens 365 days a year. But it is not recommended to visit the south coast with a rough sea, from May to September. It is recommended to visit Galle Underwater Museum every year from 1st November to 30th April. All of the sculptures at the Galle Underwater Museum have been created using cement and eco-friendly materials by the navy sailors. You can see various types of marine historical sculptures in the underwater museum. And also you can see many species of fish, but coral reefs have not been developed yet in this area.

This museum is located under 15 Meters deep sea and you must be properly trained by a recognized diving school to visit the under-water museum and must be a PADI Open Water license holder. PADI stands for “Professional Association of Diving Instructors”. The PADI Course Course is a performance-based diving training course that focuses on practical knowledge, safety, and motor skills at an introductory level. The basics of diving physics and physiology are introduced in entry-level programs.

The entrance is free, but you have to pay for diving center fees. To get the location of the underwater museum you need to visit a boat with the necessary diving equipment through any registered boat company located in the Galle, Hikkaduwa. or the Unawatuna area.
