Thudugala Ella falls in Kalutara

Thudugala Ella falls in Kalutara

Thudugala Ella Falls is located in the village of Thudugala in the Dodangoda Divisional Secretariat in the Kalutara District in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. This is the 268th out of 382 waterfalls recorded in Sri Lanka. Spread over an area of about 400 hectares, the environment around Thudugala Falls is beautiful. This waterfall, which has become a famous bathing place, is located in a garden that once belonged to Britain and his ruined country house can still be seen there.

There is also a natural canal pool surrounded by Ketala plants and ferns. In the nearby forest reserve, there are many migratory birds and native birds, e.g. The smallest bird in the country is the “Pale Bellied Flower Pecker”. It is reported that there are mouse deer and parrots in the forest around Thudugala. You can see endemic freshwater fish such as Stephen Martenstini, Halber Dandia (Rasboroid vaterifloris), and other aquatic birds.

Although 263 m (862.9 ft) high, it is shorter than other waterfalls in Sri Lanka such as Bambarakanda Falls but 8 m (26.2 ft) high is listed by the Ela Lanka Council as the most popular waterfall in the country. Another feature is a tunnel beneath the waterfall that rises to one side. In the early days of small hydropower plants in Sri Lanka, a hydropower plant was built near Thudugala Falls. However, it is said that this power plant which also provided power to the Thudugala Rubber Factory will be shut down in the ’70s.

You can easily reach the falls from Colombo, Kalutara, Matugama, Horana, and even Bentota. This is believed to have been known as the Lower Falls for some time. Because Thudugala Falls has two floors. The ground floor is about 8 meters high. If you want to go to the upper floor, you have to climb up the lower floor. You can climb it on the rocks here. However, these rocks can slip when the water level rises. Therefore, we recommend that you follow the footpath in the middle of the forest on the south side. The upper floor of Thudugala Falls is about 6 meters high.

Traveling during the rainy season (May-September) is better than seeing her fall at full capacity. But be extra careful about slippery stones. The waterfall can be overflowing with travelers on weekends and holidays. So travel on weekdays if possible. Enter the waterfall via Thudugala as instructed above. There is only one small shop in the vicinity, which serves a limited number of local food items. Please take care of the environment and do not leave non-perishable materials such as plastic bottles and polythene. Enjoy this gift of nature on your vacation to Kalutara.
