Ussangoda National Park is located in the Welipatanwila area of Ambalantota in the Southern Province and is a popular tourist destination. The soil in this Ussangoda area is red. Also, this land has a very heavy rock species. These rocks are similar to volcanic eruptions. This red soil is very special. No plant species grow on this soil.
Dry plants such as karaba, cactus, and ermine in the Kalametiya Sanctuary grow on this soil layer due to the deposition of soil layers washed away by the wind from other areas. Also, only medicines such as Navahandi, Suryakanthi, Chandrakanthi, and Vishnukanthi are found naturally here.
Legend has it that this was the area where King Rawana’s plane flew in the past. It is also believed that the large red sandstone was formed from aerial burns. Another belief is that a meteorite has created red soil and large rocks in the area. Confirming this belief, one can see the appearance of a vacuum in this area.

One boundary of the Ussangoda Park faces the sea. The area which is heavily eroded by the sea has not been brought to the notice of any authority. Garbage and various abuses reduce the value of this Ussangoda park. So Ussangoda can be mentioned as a special heritage that should be protected.
