Uthuwankanda Mountain

Uthuwankanda Mountain

Uthuwankanda is a unique creation of nature, with a kind of sad story hidden in it. There is hardly anyone in Sri Lanka who has not heard of Uthuwankanda. Uthuwankanda has become famous due to the history that is woven around it.

Sura Saradiel, who lived in Utuwankanda as his stronghold, was a hero of the common people who lived in this country during the British colonial period. What Saradiel did was to rob the rich people who lived at that time and distribute the money to the poor people. That is why Saradiel is known as the “Robinhood of Sri Lanka”. However, he was later arrested and sentenced to death. As his execution neared its execution, the governor sent a messenger to cancel it, but Saradiel was killed when the messenger arrived. A proud statue of Saradial can still be seen at Galigamuwa Junction.

Climbing is not difficult, as you can see the mountains clearly. But it is wise to climb without making too much noise because there are wasps. The other important thing is that the road near the top of the hill is very dangerous. So do not take small children. The most dangerous is the top of Utuwankanda hill. It has a space of about 3 square meters. There is a big precipice in the corner. It’s also hard to climb to the top. That journey is not something a sick or elderly person can go on anyway.

When you finally reach the top of the mountain, do not forget to visit the cave in the middle of it. There is a tunnel and it is considered to be a secret passage used at that time. After a short walk, you will come to a cave surrounded by rocks. It is possible to travel further in the tunnel, but the journey is risky as snakes can roam. You can reach Saradiel village by crossing the Colombo Kandy road and turning at Utuwankanda junction.

January and February are the best months to visit as the rainfall is low. Rainfall is slightly higher in May, July and at the end of the year. Avoid mountaineering during the rainy season. This is a beautiful and very dangerous journey. Take away the polythene and non-perishable material you are carrying. Save the environment and enjoy its beauty. Carry enough water.
