Viharamahadewi Park in Colombo

Viharamahadewi Park in Colombo

The largest park in Colombo was originally known as Victoria Gardens but after it was renamed Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugemunu. It stands out for its super flowering trees that bloom in March, April, and early May. It is located in an old part of the city and is close to historical monuments such as the Colonial- era Town Hall Building, the National Museum, and the Colombo Public Library. Having received extensive renovations recently, it is now an essential place for city residents to relax and have fun.

The park was built by Charles Henry de Zoysa on land donated to the city of Colombo during the British rule in Sri Lanka. Named “Victoria Park” after Queen Victoria. It was captured by British troops during World War II. After the war, the park was renovated in 1951 and opened to the public, and at the time it was named Viharamahdevi Park after the ancient Queen Viharamahadevi. Another facet of the park’s history was the cricket field inside the park. It was used for international level cricket from 1927 to 1995. In 1927 Sri Lanka played against a touring English team and in 1935 against an Australian team. Over time, however, the land fell into disrepair and was later cleared.

The play space for children is extensive. The best part about this area is the small landscapes outside the park – the blue and purple sidewalks roll up the hill, and some parts of the hill are lined with tunnels that allow children to crawl through. There are mat-slides, swings, and overall work around this small hill. You’ll also find ponies around this area, carrying kids on their backs or dragging small carriages of children, for about Rs. 100. Seats made of wood and concrete can be seen throughout the garden. This park is a special place for lovers. They have the opportunity to be free there.

The lake and the suspension bridge over it have always been a popular attraction in the park. There are clean concrete slabs around the lake to sit and watch the view. If you walk into the park near the Public Library, you will see a majestic quiet space with a high tomb and memorial walls honoring Sri Lankan and European soldiers who died in both world wars. There is a small aquarium at the east end of the park. This requires a small fee for a ticket. Although it is not comparable to a complete aquarium, it is worth a visit as it has a collection of cheap and rare local fish. Viharamahadevi Park is one of the most important and must-see historical places in Colombo.
