Wasgamuwa National Park is a nature park located in the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts of Sri Lanka. It was named in 1984 for the protection and protection of displaced wildlife during the Mahaweli Development Project. It is established on 7th August in 1984. Originally designated a nature reserve in 1938, the area was restored to a strict nature reserve in the early 1970s.

The natural park is about 225 kilometers away from the capital city of Colombo with the nearest town being Polonnaruwa. Wasgamuwa is spread over a sprawling 36,900 hectares, surrounded by River Amban Ganga and River Mahaweli Ganga on the eastern and western sides of the National Park. This park is suitable for tourists coming from any part of Sri Lanka, especially those traveling from Kandy. The entrance to the park is located at Handungamuwa and can be accessed from Kandy, Hasakala, and Hettipola. National Park is located at a distance of 57 km from Kandy and it takes about 1 hour to reach the Wasgamuwa entrance.

The center of attraction is the herd of up to 150 elephants. The best time to visit the Wasgamuwa nature park would be from November to May as the weather is pleasant and also makes for the best time to spot elephants at the park. Elephants tend to migrate to Mineriya and Kaudulla National Parks during the rest of the year. Other wildlife includes purple-faced langur monkeys, sambars, wild boar and spotted deer, buffalo, and rare leopards and bears. Reptiles include water monitors, mugger crocodiles, estuarine crocodiles, and pythons.

Among the 143 bird species recorded in Wasgamuwa National Park, the endemic red-faced Malkoha is a common sight in Sri Lanka’s wild bird park. Among the bird populations in Sri Lanka Trogon, racquet tailed drongo, endemic yellow fronted barbet, endemic Sri Lanka spurfowl, white neck stork, and lesser adjutant stork.
