Yahangala is a bed-shaped mountain on the eastern edge of the Knuckles Range. It is a hiking area which is situated in the central highlands of the island. Yahangala, which is associated with several occasions related to the legend of Ravana, has now become a wonderful oasis for climbers. Yahangala, located at an elevation of 1220 m above sea level, is one of the most mysterious mountain peaks in Sri Lanka. If you want to go to this beautiful place which is about 100km from Kurunegala, first you have to reach Ududumbara on Hasalaka Road in Kandy and from there you have to travel another 12 km on the Kalugala road.
According to the villagers, this is located on the site of the god Gale Bandara. Under his protection. It is very dangerous to climb this during the rainy season and as it is a site of the god “Gale Bandara”, it is a place that should be visited with good intentions vegetarianism in the first place. This is because there are enough cases that some spiritual powers are still here. As long as you love plants and animals, it will not hurt you.
Legend has it that the unconscious body of King Rawana was buried in this rock. It is believed that the body of King Rawana was buried inside Yahangala as the battle of Rama Rawana took place around Lakegala. It is also believed to be one of the places where King Rawana hid Goddess Sita. According to another folklore, there was a Bandara Deva in the rock. It is said that God Gale Bandara who provided the village with the necessary tools helped to make the paddy cultivation prosperous.
However, there is evidence that a sage or a religious saint who later lived here meditated. There is also a dripstone cave here. It is also our duty as tourists to keep such valuable places clean without polluting them.
