Gal viharaya is a rock temple. Gal viharaya is situated in the city of Polonnaruwa. Gal viharaya is located in the north-central province of Sri Lanka. It was fashioned in the 12th century. In Polonnaruwa there are many monuments that date back over two thousand years.
Gal viharaya was built by king parakramabhahu. The main feature o gal viharaya is the four images of the Buddha that have been carved on the large granite rock face. It is the best example of the rock carving and sculpting arts of the ancient Sinhalese.
