Hike to Wangedigala

Wangedigala is a popular hill station located in the village of Kalupahana. The name “Wangedigala” refers to a pestle which is because the top of the peak represents the shape of a pestle. Passing through the Wangedigala forest, one can see amazing views of the surrounding areas including Bambarakanda Falls and Lanka Ella. Climbers want to climb slopes covered with pine needles. Therefore extra care should be taken as the slope may be slippery when drying.

From Belihuloya travel approximately 14 km along the Colombo – Batticaloa Highway and then approximately 3.2 km along the Kalupahana – Ohiya Road to reach Wangedigala. If you are coming from Colombo, after passing Balangoda towards Badulla, you can cross this Wangedigala near Kalupahana Junction. There are two paths to get to this place. One is near the Welioya Double Bridge. Another one is near Babarakanda Falls. You can easily travel if you choose the road near the Welioya Double Bridge. The road near Babarakanda Falls is divided into two parts. One of the roads joins the road that falls near the Double Bridge near an upstairs shrine.

The other road is through a dense jungle. If you do not have the experience, it is not recommended to travel that route. So on the way near Double Bridge, you can experience a wonderful journey through the pine forest. When you go to Wangedigala you can see Bambara Kanda Falls which is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Lanka Falls can also be seen in the distance. Below the hill, you can see the Badulla-Colombo main road. Above Wangedigala is Wangedi Kanda, Balathuduwa and Gommolliya have been able to create a beautiful environment.
