Kadadora Vihara in Kothmale

Kadadora Vihara in Kothmale

Kadadora Vihara is also known as Kadadora Sri Priyabimbarama Viharaya. It is a Buddhist temple. The temple was abandoned in 1979 due to the construction of the Kotmale Dam by the Mahaweli Development Program. There are many temples submerged in the water of the reservoir. The ruins of temples and human settlements can still be seen today.

More than 14 tea estates, 57 villages, and about 54 ancient temples are said to have been submerged during the construction of the reservoir. But many places are not even underwater today. As a miracle, the Kadadora temple and the Buddha statues can still be seen when the water level is low.
