Some Famous Street Foods you should try out in Sri Lanka

Isso Vadei 

‘Isso Vadei’ is a delicious nosh you can find in most of the towns in Sri Lanka selling outside in a small cart or you can taste these for sure when you are traveling by train in Sri Lanka. ’Isso Vadei ’ is an orange color spicy lentil cakes that have prawns either mixed in or balanced on top. These are wonderful quick bites for the people walking around the blustery seafronts in Colombo.

Samosas

When you take a stroll around Pettah’s central station, filled with numerous food stalls you will certainly find these ‘Samosas’. Vegetable samosas are a staple of Sri Lankan cuisine and while they can practically be found all over the city, they are particularly popular in this area. These triangle-shaped Samosas are made by frying up flatbread stuffed with a mixture of vegetables and spices and yeah, it’s really yummy and spicy.

Kottu

‘Kottu’ is known as the king of Sri Lankan street food and it’s marvelously one of the tasteful dishes found in Sri Lanka. The dish is made from Godhamba roti, vegetables, egg, spices and there are meat options if preferred. Though it seems like an easy enough dish to make people rarely make it at home. It is prepared on a hot cooking surface with two rectangular knives chopping the roti and accompaniments up into small pieces before it is served piping hot. Kothu is usually accompanied with sauce to put over it like Masala sauce.

Hoppers

Sri Lankans love their hoppers – a pancake bowl served with either eggs in the morning or curries in the evening. Add your own sambols called ‘Lunu Miris’ and chutneys. It is basically the Sri Lankan version of thin pancakes with crispy edges. Traditionally an egg is cracked over the bowl-shaped pancake until it cooks.

Roti

‘Roti’ is a simple Sri Lankan flatbread made with wheat flour and added ingredients create different varieties like Thengappu made with dried coconut flakes and Uraippu Roti made with chopped onions and green chilies. Two rotis mingled together mixing with sambol or lunu miris in the middle would give you the real taste of so-called street foods.
